    Three different numerical codes are employed to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of wings with separation induced vortex flows. Both flat as well as cambered wings of various planform shapes are studied. The effects of wing thickness, fuselage, notch ratio and multiple vortex modeling on aerodynamic performance of the wing are also examined. The theoretically predicted results are compared with experimental results to validate the various computer codes used in this study. An analytical procedure for designing aerodynamically effective leading edge extension (LEE) for a thick delta wing is also presented

    An analytical design procedure for the determination of effective leading edge extensions on thick delta wings

    An analytical design procedure for leading edge extensions (LEE) was developed for thick delta wings. This LEE device is designed to be mounted to a wing along the pseudo-stagnation stream surface associated with the attached flow design lift coefficient of greater than zero. The intended purpose of this device is to improve the aerodynamic performance of high subsonic and low supersonic aircraft at incidences above that of attached flow design lift coefficient, by using a vortex system emanating along the leading edges of the device. The low pressure associated with these vortices would act on the LEE upper surface and the forward facing area at the wing leading edges, providing an additional lift and effective leading edge thrust recovery. The first application of this technique was to a thick, round edged, twisted and cambered wing of approximately triangular planform having a sweep of 58 deg and aspect ratio of 2.30.     PAN AIR application to the F-106B

    The PAN AIR computer code was employed in the present study to investigate the aerodynamic effects of the various geometrical changes and flow conditions on a configuration similar to the F-106B half-airplane tested in the Langley 30x60-foot wind tunnel. The various geometries studied included two forebodies (original and shortened), two inlet flow conditions (open and closed) two vortex flap situations (off and on). The attached flow theoretical solutions were obtained for Mach number of 0.08 and angle of attack of 8 deg., 10 deg., 12 deg., and 14 deg. In general this investigation revealed that the shortening of the forebody or closing of the inlet produced only a small change in the overall aerodynamic coefficients of the basic F-106B configuration throughout the examined angles of attack. However, closing the inlet of the configuration resulted in a slightly higher drag level at low angles of attack. Furthermore, at and above 10 deg. angle of attack, it was shown that the presence of the vortex flap causes an increase in the total lift and drag. Also, these theoretical results showed the expected reduction in longitudinal stability level with addition of the vortex flap to the basic F-106B configuration

    Fuzzy Interactive Approach for a Multi-objective Supplier Selection Problem under Robust Uncertainty

    In this paper, the authors proposed a multi-objective Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model for supplier selection problems. The main aim of the system under the investigation is to plan the companies to supply goods to achieve financial benefit by minimizing the total costs and satisfying the customers with on-time delivery and minimizing rejected items. In this case, some restrictions such as multi-product and multi-period conditions, shortage inventory constraints, and discount circumstances simultaneously are considered. Despite these efforts, due to the uncertainty nature of the problem, some parameters are considering as uncertainty data. For this aim, applying robust counterparts for uncertain parameters plays an essential role in real-world applications of this case. It is concluded that the feasibility and optimality properties of the usual solutions of real-world LPs can be severely affected by small changes of the data and that the robust optimization (RO) methodology can be successfully used to overcome this phenomenon

    Prevalence of human papillomavirus genotypes in women with normal and abnormal cervical cytology in Iran

    Introduction: HPV infection has a prime etiologic role in development and progression of cervical cancer, one of the most frequent forms of cancer among women in developing countries. This study was designed to determine the most prevalent HPV genotypes in women with normal and abnormal cervical cytology in Iran. Materials and Methods: Samples from134 patients, including 127 who attended gynecology clinics and 7 with solid cervical tumors were used. All 127 patients underwent routine Pap tests for cytological evaluation and at the same visit a sample of cervical epithelial cells was obtained by scraping the cervix osteum. In each case HPV infection was primarily evaluated by PCR using GP 5/6 primers and then subtyping was performed in proved infected samples with specific primers for HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 11 and 6. After cytological evaluation, 50 patients with abnormal Pap tests were categorized as the abnormal group and the remaining 77 patients as the normal group. Results: In the normal group, HPV infection was established in 10 cases (13% infection rate), while 30 HPV positive cases were discovered in the abnormal group (60% infected). The most prevalent genotypes among the infected samples were HPV 16 (76%), HPV18 (12.7%) and HPV11/6 (8.5%). Moreover, all 7 tumor samples were positive for HPV general primers of which, 5 samples were infected with HPV 16, two were co-infected with HPV16,18 and HPV16,31 genotypes and one was infected with HPV 18. Conclusions: Infection with HPV 16 was found to be significantly higher in abnormal group in comparison with normal group (42% vs. 11.6%, P value <0.005), likewise HPV18 genotypes were proved to be more prevalent in abnormal group (8% vs. 0%, P value <0.05). No significant relation between other HPV genotypes and pathologic cervical changes was obtained. According to our study high rates of infection with HPV genotypes in sexually active Iranian women makes molecular investigation for HPV16 and 18 very essential in clinical approaches to patients with proven dysplasia in their screening tests and also for those patients with borderline (i.e. ASCUS) or incongruous pathology reports. Larger studies are required to determine the most appropriate vaccine with highest protection in Iranian women

    Study of highly sweptback wings by the free vortex sheet method

    The aerodynamic characteristics of highly sweptback wings with separations induced vortex flows have been numerically investigated using the free vortex sheet method, developed by Boeing Company, under a contract with NASA/Langley Research Center. The models studied included delta and straked wings, and wings with leading edge extensions. Also, PAN-AIR code has been used to design a fixed leading edge extension into a thick delta wing. The theoretical results predicted have been compared with the experimental data wherever available, and the code capabilities and limitations explored. New fuselage effects also have been considered in some cases

    Opium addiction in patients with coronary artery disease: A grounded theory study

    Background: There are widespread misconceptions about the positive effects of opium on coronary artery disease (CAD). Thus, we performed a study to explore the opium addiction process contributing factors among CAD patients using a grounded theory approach. Methods: The sample comprised 30 addicted CAD patients and their family members, physicians, nurses and friends. Purposive and theoretical sampling was employed; semi-structured interviews were conducted. Coding and constant comparative analysis techniques were as proposed by Strauss and Corbin (1998). Results: The core category was 'Fighting for Survival', comprising three main themes, namely, 'the gateway', 'blowing into the fire' and 'getting stuck in the mud'. Conclusion: Increasing knowledge about the adverse effects of opium on the cardiovascular system would reinforce prevention and rehabilitation measures. Involving patients' family-members in addiction prevention and rehabilitation programs and referring patients to specialized rehabilitation centres could help patients quit opium. Healthcare providers (HCPs) should notice to the effects of opium consumption among CAD patients; nursing care must be holistic in nature. Although opium is stigmatised in Iran, HCPs must treat addicted CAD patients similar to other patients. Nursing students' must be aware of the negative effects of illegal drugs on CAD patients and the misconceptions regarding the positive effects thereof. Any misconceptions must be probed and clarified. Rehabilitation centres must be supervised by cardiologists and HCPs

    Combining mammaglobin and carcinoembryonic mRNA markers for early detection of micrometastases from breast cancers - a molecular study of 59 patients

    Introduction: As many as 30% of node-negative breast cancer patients relapse within five years, suggesting that current histological detection methods are inadequate for identifying metastatic disease. Detecting small number of cancer cells in the breast tissue or lymph node by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays using a combination of tissue and cancer specific markers might be very useful in the early detection or monitoring of the treatment. Mammaglobin is a member of the uteroglobin gene family and appears to be expressed only in breast tissue. Carcinoembryonic antigen has been the preferred molecular marker for detection of micro metastases in lymph nodes in almost all carcinomas. Materials and Methods: Samples were collected from randomly chosen breast cancer patients undergoing modified mastectomy or breast conserving surgery between September 2003 and July 2004. RT-PCR was applied to study the expression of MMG and CEA markers. Breast cancer micrometastases in axillary lymph nodes were also assessed. Results: The MMG marker was positive in 9/10 normal breast tissues, 3/ 3 breast fibroadenomas and 37/39 of breast carcinoma tissues, giving an overall sensitivity of 94%. The sensitivity was 80% for metastatic lymph node samples. On the other hand CEA showed 95% sensitivity for malignant breast tumors and 100% sensitivity for metastatic lymph nodes. Conclusions: RT-PCR using a combination of MMG and CEA markers is a powerful tool to complement current routine histopathology techniques for detection of breast cancer metastasis in axillary nodes

    Development and psychometric evaluation of the patient safety violation scale in medical oncology units in Iran

    Background: Patient safety is one of the key components of nursing care for cancer cases. Valid and reliable context-based instruments are necessary for accurate evaluation of patient safety in oncology units. The aim of the present study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Patient Safety Violation Scale in medical oncology units in Iran. Materials and Methods: In this methodological study, a pool of 58 items was generated through reviewing the existing literature. The validity of the 58-item scale was assessed through calculating impact score, content validity ratio, and content validity index for its items as well as conducting exploratory factor analysis. The reliability of the scale was evaluated by assessing its internal consistency and testretest stability. Study sample consisted of 300 oncology nurses who were recruited from thirteen teaching hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Results: Sixteen items were excluded from the scale due to having low impact scores, content validity ratios, or content validity indices. In exploratory factor analysis, the remaining 42 items were loaded on five factors including patient fall, verification of patientidentity, harm during care delivery, delay in care delivery, and medication errors. These five factors explained 62 of the total variance. The Cronbach's alpha of the scale and the test-retest interclass correlation coefficient were equal to 0.933 and 0.92, respectively. Conclusions: The 42-item Patient Safety Violation Scale is a simple and short scale which has acceptable validity and reliability. Consequently, it can be used for assessing patient safety in clinical settings such as medical oncology units and for research projects
